I definitely get that it's not for everyone. I found it to be beautifully crafted and heartfelt, and with a lens into a world I didn't know anything about (video game creation) and it's artistry. I loved the flawed, quirky characters, and the tension between them.
I also have a VERY LONG list of books that people adore that I cannot believe are so hyped as well...and a lot of them are on best seller lists, best of lists, and made into big Hollywood productions. A lot of the "big books" don't make sense to me.
i agree on both counts. the book was beautifully written and the story was original in some regards. i just didn't like the 2 primary characters and i didn't like what happened to the only character i even sort of liked. but i do think the author is incredibly talented.
and most of the books i love aren't going to make it onto "best of" lists, which i think is a flaw in "best of" lists to begin with. they tend to be considered serious literature with serious subject matter. i can read those books and often find them compelling. deeply moving. but i usually need a buffer after them, you know. a palate cleanser.
anyway, thank you for making your own list. i really enjoy reading perspectives beyond the nyt.
Yey for Circe!
It's so so so brilliant. Every phrase...
I love that Circe is on your list! It’s on mine, too.
I will say that I did try to read tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow and hated it. I don’t get why everyone likes it so much.
